Build links from .edu forums

This is the ninth post in The Link Building Cookbook series that shows you the best techniques to build links to your websites and blogs.

While there are hundreds of forums running on .edu domains, few allow anyone to register and post comments threads with links to your websites. Listed below are four university forums that allow you to register and get free links to your website. To many, this sounds like a huge waste of time as all of the new posts will be PR0, but over time it will certainly be beneficial. I recommend spending 1-2 hours building links from these forums when you have some free time.

  10. This seems like a dishonest way of increasing your PageRank and generate traffic. However, I am glad things like this are discussed out in the open for the people who manage can do the appropriate filtering mechanisms. Thanks for the heads up :-)

  12. My research group at MIT created and maintains the *removed* website that is listed in this post. The Scratch site is intended to help children and teens develop as creative thinkers. I find it deeply disturbing and unethical that you are encouraging people to insert irrelevant links into our discussion forums. Please delete the URL of the *removed* forums from your post.

  34. I believe that .edu links do in fact increase your rankings in the search engines. However, they are very hard to acquire. The end result however, I believe would be worth it.

  38. When my daughter starts college at UC Berkeley, I’m going to TRY to convince her to start a web site or blog (about weddings, of course!). Her page will have 5 links out, and MINE will be one of them…..Muahahhaahaha (Dr Evil laugh).

  42. Do you have any other or know of any other .edu or .gov forums to post on? Where did you find that original list btw? I don’t think they work anymore.

  44. I saw the EDU forum, and did post there. But my post was not a spam type of comment. They were asking about consumer finance, and today’s financial situation. My page rank fell from pr4 to pr3 after the next index!!

  46. Just because your PR rank went down does not mean that it was the result of posting the forums of an .edu site. Ranking can go down for many reasons and it can take a long time for new links to start counting towards your rank.

I would love a list of other .gov or .edu sites I could post on.

  50. Collin, I spoke to my daughter’s new bf at UC Berkeley, and it seems there is a very ethical way to establish legit links from EDU sites: START A CLUB.

for example, a college student could start an “Internet Marketing Club”, which of course encompasses SEO and Link Building as part of its blog, which would be hosted on the .edu domain of that college.

Collin, when are YOU going to start a club at your school?

  52. Today I discovered that my daughter’s college hosts an Energy Resources Blog.

It just so happens that I’m very interested in Solar Photovoltaic roof panels and Solar hot water for my home.

We also have 3 sunny acres where Prototypes could be installed, free of charge (we would get the electricity, of course….LOL).

Having a daughter in college = PRICELESS

  58. Wow , I’m amazed at how fussy these people get with dropping links on forums.

It’s not like people are bombing you , just making a post or two , putting a link in and leaving…Very little harm in that.

  62. This may indeed be a great way to improve seo with quality links like .edu. Do take heed of the spamming warning though. If you spam you’ll lose the link opportunity. Always try a find a topic you are interested in and can offer something useful about.
